I did some hairy fur tests long ago too, but different approach though, just based in the pixel color to determine the rotation of a line:

wow! “My pixel counterpart” looks the most realistic (imo), probably as it’s the most subtle… Looks just like the texture of a cowskin we’ve got under our dining table. Is there some “lighting” involved, or are the “seeds” for these hairs selected with some random value appended to the color picked from the image?
