The amazing ride of ToneMatrix

I visited the Frankfurter Musikmesse 2 weeks ago and played with the Yamaha TENORI-ON. I thought, it would be much nicer when the triggered notes would force a wavemap to oscillate. It took me just a few hours to implement. The sound generation is basically a polyphone synthesizer with a simple delay with a variing read-offset to make the tones vibrating in the end. I am already addicted for myself to the cute sequences it always generates.

After uploading it on my laboratory the run began. I am counting more than 250.000 impressions, endless feedback, suggestions and even videos on Youtube. I will definitely put the sequencer in our AudioTool. But don’t expect an update before autumn. We are trying to make 1.0 a serious music application with sequencing, automation, modulation, audio-tracks, synthesizers and what not. So there is no time to enhance this little toy. But I have added at least Clipboard support to let you save your pattern to sequence of numbers. Unfortunately the audio output is very glitchy when the context-menu is running.

Audio is the next big thing in Flash.

  1. Hallo! I really like your tonematrix game. Can we add the link to our website? I think lot of people could enjoy it! Thank you, Ridina

PS aren t you by chance planing to make a voice – game instead of just sounds? :-)

  2. Absolutely fantastic! Awesome toy, i’m lovin’ it. Would be great to have an export feature to use the composition in Garage Band etc.

    Thanks for sharing this,
    Falk

  3. Please Please, make this available as a downloadable App for PC/Mac or whatever! This is an amazing tool.. so so much fun =]

  4. This is great. i work with students who access the computer using switches. I can easily provide access to the web based Tone Matrix, but I’m curious if you can make it available so students with disabilities who do not have Internet access could still play around with accessing and composing the tones.

    Thanks!!!

  5. Hi,

If I were to write a program that randomly generate on/off blocks based on a initial condition, how should I implement it?

I dont have much programming knowlege, so all I have is an idea. I’d appreciate any directions I can get!

    Thanks!

  6. ToneMatrix and pulse
    congratulations Andre, this is awesome!!!
a few brainstorming ideas: possibility to record rhe music, save the patterns, pause and play, edit, ad another instruments. Could be an interface to play on live for dj’s or fun, could be a toy ap for kids and adults, app for smartphone. the begining of a new UI and NUI for music software. Ad images to play with same rythm. record and post diffrenr patterns for the ussers,. ANd mean while we play, we record progressive, saving the patterns in a time line to the posibility to edit after that and ad to some another music programs like ableton. some few brainstorming. Congrats, again magnificent work. Pabvloc

  7. I have specific application and would like to discuss any licensing, rights, etc. Just want to be respective of your effort on this VERY nice app. Congratulations! And I echo all the comments here.

    Great work!

  8. This is very cool! I love the tenori on and I think a simple, flash based interface is a great idea. I LOVE the copy / paste feature – SO COOL. One suggestion would be to research a way to have multiple windows (tabs even) open at the same time and have them sync together, maybe pick different instruments or tone ranges on each tab.

  9. I dig it I am wondering, however, how one organizes the matrix in accordance with the numbered codes that people keep leaving. I would really appreciate it thanks :)

    Made it XD

  11. Exactly how might we benefit my own Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder child. Free of drugs like Adderall. My son can not do his studying or simply cease moving in class. The instructors really want my family to take our kid to some family doctor to have our son clinically diagnosed as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and put on prescription drugs. This approach scares the hell out of us. I took lots of meds myself growing up to put our kid on them.

  12. Hey!

I’ve been playing with this for years now, and I decided to do a clone of it while learning scala and opengl.
But I just can’t find the right MIDI instrument number that sounds right. Can you give a hand? :)

    Thanks!

  13. wuld love to be able to use this live, does anyone know how to get it working offline? would pay for a downloadable version!

  14. Great for setting up polyrhythms.
If you have trouble reading music you could also use it to figure out the tempo of difficult 16th note passages.

  15. I’d love to include ToneMatrix on my site for children. Can you let me know if this is possible?

    thx,
    c-

  16. So I just discovered an instrument patch on my Korg keyboard that sounds *exactly* like your tonematrix. The patch, for anyone interested is called “DWGS Sine” … so now I can set a beat with your software and play alone with it on my microKey. I guess DWGS stands for “Digital Waveform Generator System” … sounds exactly same. You just have set the Attack to 100% to get that *pop*
